Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is one of the most unusual landscapes in Colorado. Located at the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the park contains the tallest sand dunes in North America. Huge piles of sand rise suddenly from a broad valley, while snow-covered mountain peaks create a dramatic background.
The dunes were formed over thousands of years. Sand and sediment were carried into the San Luis Valley by rivers and streams. Strong winds then pushed the sand toward the mountains, where opposing air currents helped trap it. Over time, enormous dunes developed and continued to change shape as the wind moved sand from one place to another.
Visitors are allowed to walk almost anywhere across the main dune field. There are no marked trails on the dunes, so people can choose their own route. Hiking through deep, loose sand can be surprisingly difficult, especially when climbing steep slopes. During sunny summer days, the surface of the sand can also become extremely hot, making early morning or evening a more comfortable time to explore.
One of the park's most popular seasonal features is Medano Creek. During late spring and early summer, melting snow from the mountains creates a shallow stream that flows along the edge of the dunes. Depending on water levels, visitors may walk through the creek, relax beside it, or watch small waves form across the sandy bottom. Later in the year, the creek may become very shallow or disappear completely.
The park offers more than sand. Forests, wetlands, alpine areas, and mountain environments surround the dune field. Wildlife includes elk, mule deer, black bears, coyotes, and many species of birds.
After dark, Great Sand Dunes can feel completely different. With limited artificial light nearby, the park provides excellent conditions for viewing stars and the Milky Way.
The contrast is what makes this place memorable. In a single view, visitors may see golden sand, green forests, blue skies, and rugged mountains. Great Sand Dunes National Park feels almost like a desert placed unexpectedly in the middle of the Rocky Mountains.
