While the ridged edges on coins like quarters and dimes may seem like a purely aesthetic choice, they serve a fascinating historical purpose rooted in fraud prevention. Centuries ago, when coins were minted from precious metals like gold and silver, dishonest individuals would frequently "clip" or shave tiny flakes of metal from the smooth edges of the coins to sell the scraps. This practice, known as coin clipping, gradually devalued the currency over time. To combat this, the Royal Mint and other global authorities introduced "reeding"—or the creation of notches—along the circumference of the coins. If someone attempted to shave even a fraction of the metal away, the deliberate pattern would be visibly disrupted, making it immediately obvious that the coin had been tampered with. Today, this tradition persists as a standard design element, serving as a clever security feature and a tactile aid for individuals who are visually impaired to distinguish between denominations in their pockets.
