Liberia is a West African country bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, Ivory Coast, and the Atlantic Ocean. Its capital, Monrovia, serves as the political, economic, and cultural center. Liberia has a unique history, having been founded in the nineteenth century as a settlement for formerly enslaved people from the United States through the efforts of the American Colonization Society. It declared independence in 1847, making it Africa's oldest republic and one of the few countries on the continent that was never formally colonized by a European power. The economy is supported by agriculture, mining, shipping, and forestry, with rubber, iron ore, and timber among its important industries. Liberia experienced two civil wars between 1989 and 2003 that caused significant damage to infrastructure and institutions. Since then, the country has focused on rebuilding its economy, strengthening democratic governance, and improving education, healthcare, and regional cooperation.
