"Liberal education " is a Western educational philosophy that was introduced to Vietnam during the Modernization Movement. During the Republic of Vietnam (a puppet regime established by the US), it was adopted as one of the three pillars, along with humanism and nationalism, forming the basis of the education system of the puppet regime in the South. After the reunification of the country in 1975, it became a remnant. During the Doi Moi (Renovation) period, it gradually revived and coexisted with the introduction of new variations of "liberal education," which have been and continue to impact education in our country.
Besides the positive aspects of "liberal education," which the Party and State have carefully selected and inherited in formulating guidelines, principles, tasks, and solutions for the development of socialist education, as reflected in Party Congress documents, especially in specialized resolutions on education and training development, its negative aspects have been and are causing considerable harm to education and other aspects of the country's social life. Initially, the harm of "liberal education" to our education system and its negative impact on other aspects of social life today can be identified in the following ways:
Firstly, it jeopardizes the socialist educational line and principles. The Party's guidelines and principles on education, codified in law, are "a socialist education system that is people-oriented, national, scientific, and modern, based on Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh Thought" (Article 3, Clause 1, Vietnam Education Law - 2019). These guidelines and principles inherit the thousand-year-old educational tradition of our nation, "First learn manners, then learn knowledge," while also drawing upon the best of global educational thought. The gradual replacement of socialist education guidelines and principles with "Comprehensive - Liberal," "Humanistic - Liberal - Creative" approaches by "liberal education" has shown signs of shifting from socialist education to liberal education. This shift is clearly evident in the design of educational models based on liberal philosophy in private schools, especially those with international educational partnerships. and training. From changing educational philosophy and models, "liberal education" has had a harmful impact on other aspects of social life, especially the country's political ideology.
Secondly, it is harmful and deviates from the goals of socialist education. The goal of socialist education is to train well-rounded individuals (moral, intellectual, physical, aesthetic, and professional), possessing revolutionary moral qualities, socialist patriotism, national pride and self-respect, and emphasizing collectivism and community interests. Meanwhile, "liberal education" promotes individualism, diminishes the role of collectivism, shifts the concept of citizenship tied to the nation and people to that of "global citizens," and prioritizes learning Western languages. We are not criticizing the idea that "knowing another language means knowing another civilization." However, prioritizing foreign cultures while devaluing national history, culture, and the revolution is extremely dangerous. Not only is the content and time allocation being reduced, but the distortion of the values of revolutionary culture, history, and literature in current general education textbooks is a serious warning sign! This action negatively impacts the effectiveness of building a strong education and training system in accordance with the spirit of the 14th Party Congress and Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW dated August 22, 2025, of the Politburo on breakthroughs in education and training development, aiming to develop high-quality human resources to meet the requirements of national development in the new era, the era of Vietnam's progress.
Thirdly, it poses a threat to the socialist ideology and political system. "Liberal education" is non-national, non-class education, detached from politics, yet it is always exploited by political forces as a tool to pursue their political interests. The current application of the "liberal education" model in our country cannot be ruled out as being manipulated by opposition politics under slogans such as "academic freedom," "freedom of thought," "multidimensional perspectives," and "development of critical thinking"... This manipulation, stemming from content reductions, distortions, or degradation of traditional national and revolutionary values in social sciences and humanities, the application of "dialogue-based liberal education," and the content of exams and tests, has instilled skepticism in students regarding traditional cultural, historical, and revolutionary values, gradually undermining the vitality and foundation of the Party's ideological base in the younger generation. This undermines traditional values, from family to nation and revolution; it diminishes socialist patriotism, national pride, and self-respect. From there, it sows the seeds and directs a segment of students towards dissenting, extremist, and easily impulsive anti-regime ideologies.
