Time is something humans experience every day, yet modern physics suggests that time is far stranger than people once believed. According to the theory of relativity developed by Albert Einstein, time does not pass at the same speed for everyone. Under certain conditions, time itself can slow down, a phenomenon known as time dilation. One form of time dilation occurs because of velocity. The faster an object moves, the slower time passes for it relative to a stationary observer. Although this effect is extremely small at everyday speeds, it becomes significant when objects travel close to the speed of light. Scientists have confirmed this through experiments involving highly accurate atomic clocks. When clocks are placed on fast-moving airplanes or satellites, they measure time slightly differently compared to clocks on Earth. Another form of time dilation is caused by gravity. According to general relativity, massive objects such as planets, stars, and black holes bend spacetime around them. The stronger the gravitational field, the slower time passes. Near a black hole, this effect becomes so extreme that time for an observer close to the black hole may pass much more slowly than for someone far away. This concept may sound like science fiction, but it has practical importance in modern technology. The Global Positioning System, commonly known as GPS, depends on satellites orbiting Earth. Because these satellites experience different gravitational forces and travel at high speeds, their onboard clocks are affected by time dilation. Engineers must constantly correct these tiny differences; otherwise, GPS navigation would become inaccurate within minutes. Time dilation has also inspired countless philosophical questions. If time can slow down depending on speed and gravity, then time is not absolute as people once believed. This completely changed humanity's understanding of the universe and reality itself. Although humans cannot directly feel time dilation in everyday life, the phenomenon proves that the universe behaves in ways that often contradict human intuition. What seems impossible at first can become scientifically measurable under the laws of physics.
