Here is another link to an article about typing speed:

http://orbitouch.com/wp-content/uploads ... -Speed.pdf

I also did some tests during 10 different 24-hour weekday periods to figure out the approximate median typing speed of the English normal mode:

1. 34 WPM - 168 keystrokes - You are better than 49.3% of all users (position 65890 of 129964 - last 24 hours)
2. 35 WPM - 173 keystrokes - You are better than 49.78% of all users (position 60568 of 120603 - last 24 hours)
3. 34 WPM - 170 keystrokes - You are better than 49.93% of all users (position 63423 of 126666 - last 24 hours)
4. 35 WPM - 174 keystrokes - You are better than 49.63% of all users (position 61028 of 121153 - last 24 hours)
5. 35 WPM - 174 keystrokes - You are better than 49.57% of all users (position 62665 of 124273 - last 24 hours)
6. 35 WPM - 173 keystrokes - You are better than 50.77% of all users (position 62087 of 126114 - last 24 hours)
7. 35 WPM - 175 keystrokes - You are better than 50.55% of all users (position 63383 of 128172 - last 24 hours)
8. 36 WPM - 178 keystrokes - You are better than 50.19% of all users (position 60199 of 120852 - last 24 hours)
9. 34 WPM - 170 keystrokes - You are better than 50.07% of all users (position 58205 of 116582 - last 24 hours)
10.35 WPM - 173 keystrokes - You are better than 49.79% of all users (position 66955 of 133347 - last 24 hours)

This suggest a median speed of about 35 WPM, which means half the tests were over and half were under 35 WPM.

With activity at a low point in the weekend, typically on Sunday, the median seems to be higher with about 39 WPM:

1. 39 WPM - 195 keystrokes - You are better than 50.21% of all users (position 33441 of 67165 - last 24 hours)
2. 39 WPM - 196 keystrokes - You are better than 49.66% of all users (position 32058 of 63686 - last 24 hours)
3. 38 WPM - 190 keystrokes - You are better than 49.49% of all users (position 34659 of 68612 - last 24 hours)
4. 39 WPM - 194 keystrokes - You are better than 50.28% of all users (position 32779 of 65927 - last 24 hours)

This might be due to many schools using the website for typing lessons on the weekdays. The low point of activity occurs one day during the week with around half the tests normally typed, so the median will only increase slightly, and still be about 35 WPM.

I have just turned twelve and have only a speed of 87WPM. For me that is really good.

It's very good, and I think you already knew that, especially considering you won a competition with a score of 140 WPM. Here's the average typing speed on another typing site according to one of the links posted above:

Secretary: 74 WPM
General: 43 WPM
13-year-old: 23 WPM

As you can see, you are far above the average not only for your age, but also in general and even on a professional level, assuming a speed of 75+ WPM on normal text. How well you type depends on who you want to compare yourself with, everything from average to world class. But I think you should rather focus on your own typing achievements and try to reach new typing milestones. How fast you will be able to type is up to you and depends on practice, talent and technique.

95 is good for anyone, age has nothing to do with it.

The averages that's referred to in most sources are from the English language with normal text. As mentioned before, this is generally more difficult than typing only words with mostly lowercase letters. Some are much faster here than on normal text, while others have pretty much the same speed. It all comes down to practice. If you train a lot on this site you will become more familiar with the words contained in the word banks. I still think you will improve a great deal on normal text by practicing on 10fastfingers, and even more so if the advanced test is included in the training. The advanced test will probably be a better representation of your overall speed. But again, the difference between 10fastfingers and typing normal text varies between the individual typist.

Some new information on the front page of the English test:

"What is the average typing speed on 10FastFingers?

Its hard to calculate the average typing speed as this highly depends on the language and on the word-difficulty. For the normal version of the english typing test we have calculated an average of 41 WPM, this value is based on over 73 million typing results."

While 41 WPM is up there with the averages of other sources, it still seems to be a bit low. Considering this is the normal English mode, the advanced mode will have a considerably lower average. The average of a language depends on a few factors, namely the difficulty of the test and who's typing. I believe 10fastfingers is overrepresented by younger typists, especially since this site is used for school practice. When figuring out the median speed above, the result was 35 WPM, which is consistent with the speed on weekdays. But the numbers also showed an increase in the median to around 39 WPM on Sunday when activity is at its lowest. If this is an indication of a decrease in the youngest age group who are training in school, we can assume a higher average with a more accurate reflection of the population.

Is 115 decent for an 18-year-old?

Post by Keeper » Tue Jul 15, 2014 12:06 am

I usually work as a programmer and I'm online nearly ~16 hours a day. On the scale 1/10, how's 115 WPM standing? I personally expect a bit more from myself.

Where's your account? It depends whether 115 WPM is your highest score or your average, if it's achieved on this site or somewhere else, what kind of test you took and who you want to compare yourself with (e.g. other programmers or the general typing population). Even with this info it's going to be tough to rate exactly where you stand, but we can speculate with some educated guesses or subjective views.

I just registered but 115 is like a little above average that I normally do. And yeah I do it on the normal test here. Let's say I wanna find out my position amongst other programmers.

Let's say 115 WPM is your highest score in a normal English test. To rate this properly we need a percentile rank with the highest score of all legitimate registered users, but this information is currently unavailable. Even so, I think we can safely assume you're in the 90-99th percentile and somewhere above 95. On a scale of 1-10 it equals 9/10. The problem is that everyone in the 90-99th percentile will get 9/10, including much higher scores. A better option would be to use at least two decimals and a scale of 1-10 000 to calculate this number. As an example, a percentile result of 98.85 equals 9885/10 000.

To figure out where you stand amongst programmers we would have to know the highest score of every programmer on this site. My guess is 115 WPM also ranks high in this category.
