Here is another link to an article about typing speed:

I also did some tests during 10 different 24-hour weekday periods to figure out the approximate median typing speed of the English normal mode:
1. 34 WPM - 168 keystrokes - You are better than 49.3% of all users (position 65890 of 129964 - last 24 hours)
2. 35 WPM - 173 keystrokes - You are better than 49.78% of all users (position 60568 of 120603 - last 24 hours)
3. 34 WPM - 170 keystrokes - You are better than 49.93% of all users (position 63423 of 126666 - last 24 hours)
4. 35 WPM - 174 keystrokes - You are better than 49.63% of all users (position 61028 of 121153 - last 24 hours)
5. 35 WPM - 174 keystrokes - You are better than 49.57% of all users (position 62665 of 124273 - last 24 hours)
6. 35 WPM - 173 keystrokes - You are better than 50.77% of all users (position 62087 of 126114 - last 24 hours)
7. 35 WPM - 175 keystrokes - You are better than 50.55% of all users (position 63383 of 128172 - last 24 hours)
8. 36 WPM - 178 keystrokes - You are better than 50.19% of all users (position 60199 of 120852 - last 24 hours)
9. 34 WPM - 170 keystrokes - You are better than 50.07% of all users (position 58205 of 116582 - last 24 hours)
10.35 WPM - 173 keystrokes - You are better than 49.79% of all users (position 66955 of 133347 - last 24 hours)
This suggest a median speed of about 35 WPM, which means half the tests were over and half were under 35 WPM.
With activity at a low point in the weekend, typically on Sunday, the median seems to be higher with about 39 WPM:
1. 39 WPM - 195 keystrokes - You are better than 50.21% of all users (position 33441 of 67165 - last 24 hours)
2. 39 WPM - 196 keystrokes - You are better than 49.66% of all users (position 32058 of 63686 - last 24 hours)
3. 38 WPM - 190 keystrokes - You are better than 49.49% of all users (position 34659 of 68612 - last 24 hours)
4. 39 WPM - 194 keystrokes - You are better than 50.28% of all users (position 32779 of 65927 - last 24 hours)
This might be due to many schools using the website for typing lessons on the weekdays. The low point of activity occurs one day during the week with around half the tests normally typed, so the median will only increase slightly, and still be about 35 WPM.
