Among the many organisms that exist in agricultural soils, mycorrhizal fungi are considered some of the most important and specialized. These fungi form symbiotic relationships with plant roots, creating a biological association known as mycorrhiza. Although this interaction occurs underground and often goes unnoticed, it has major effects on crop nutrition, soil structure, plant resistance, and agricultural sustainability.
There are different types of mycorrhizal fungi, but arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi are especially important in agriculture because they associate with the roots of most cultivated plants. After colonizing the root system, the fungal hyphae extend far into the soil, effectively increasing the plant’s root absorption area. This allows crops to access nutrients and water that would otherwise remain unavailable.
Phosphorus is one of the nutrients most strongly associated with mycorrhizal activity. In many soils, phosphorus becomes chemically fixed and difficult for plants to absorb. Mycorrhizal fungi help mobilize this nutrient and transport it directly into plant tissues. This process can significantly improve plant growth while reducing dependence on synthetic fertilizers. In low-fertility soils, crops with strong mycorrhizal associations often perform much better than plants without fungal colonization.
Mycorrhizae also improve plant tolerance to environmental stress. During drought conditions, fungal hyphae help plants absorb water more efficiently. Some studies suggest that mycorrhizal associations may also reduce the effects of salinity, heavy metals, and certain soil pathogens. Because of this, researchers are increasingly studying these fungi as biological tools for sustainable agriculture.
Agricultural management practices strongly influence mycorrhizal populations. Excessive tillage can physically destroy fungal networks in the soil, while high phosphorus fertilization may reduce the plant’s dependence on fungal associations. Certain fungicides can also negatively affect beneficial mycorrhizal communities. For this reason, conservation agriculture practices such as reduced tillage, cover cropping, and crop rotation are often recommended to preserve soil microbial health.
Interest in mycorrhizal inoculants has grown rapidly in recent years. These products contain beneficial fungal spores that farmers apply to seeds or soil in order to improve crop establishment and nutrient uptake. However, their effectiveness depends heavily on soil conditions, crop species, and existing microbial communities.
Although mycorrhizal fungi are microscopic and hidden beneath the soil surface, they play a critical role in modern agriculture. Understanding these complex biological interactions may become increasingly important as farmers seek more sustainable and environmentally friendly production systems in the future.
