Yellowstone National Park is one of the most famous protected areas in the United States. Established in 1872, it is widely recognized as the world's first national park. Most of Yellowstone lies in Wyoming, although small sections extend into Montana and Idaho. The park is known for geothermal features, large wildlife populations, waterfalls, forests, and wide mountain valleys.
One of Yellowstone's most famous attractions is Old Faithful, a geyser that erupts regularly and sends hot water high into the air. The park contains thousands of geothermal features, including hot springs, mud pots, fumaroles, and geysers. Grand Prismatic Spring is especially striking because of its bright blue center and colorful orange and yellow edges.
These features exist because Yellowstone sits above a huge volcanic system. Heat from deep underground warms water beneath the surface, creating the unusual geothermal activity seen throughout the park. Although the volcanic history sounds dramatic, visitors normally experience Yellowstone through its peaceful landscapes and natural beauty.
Wildlife is another major reason people visit. Yellowstone supports large populations of bison, elk, wolves, grizzly bears, black bears, moose, and many other animals. Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are especially popular for wildlife watching. Early morning and evening are often the best times to spot animals, but visitors must keep a safe distance.
The park is enormous, so driving between attractions can take several hours. Yellowstone also has five main entrances, and road conditions can change depending on weather and season. Even in summer, temperatures can vary considerably between day and night.
Another impressive location is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. The Yellowstone River cuts through colorful canyon walls and forms powerful waterfalls, including Lower Falls, which drops more than 300 feet.
Yellowstone offers an unusual combination of geology, wildlife, forests, rivers, and open landscapes. In one day, a visitor might watch a geyser erupt, see a herd of bison cross the road, hike beside a waterfall, and finish the evening under a dark sky. Few national parks offer such a wide variety of experiences in one place.
