The appendix MIGHT just have a purpose after all! Research suggests that it may be a safe place for good bacteria to live in your gut. When an illness in your gut washes out the bacteria and whatever is in it, bacteria from the appendix can come there and protect it from bad bacteria. Because we have better hygiene practices, the appendix is not needed almost at all. People think that it has no purpose, since there aren't any negative effects when you remove it.
