The City of West Kelowna and BC Hydro have agreed on a location for a vehicle charging station.
Council agreed earlier this week to enter into an agreement with the power utility to install a direct current fast charging station on a piece of city owned property at 3678 Brown Road.
The property is currently an empty lot serving as a parking lot for several businesses in the area.
Back in January, council was presented with three options for the vehicle charging station, the Mount Boucherie Complex, Johnson Bentley Memorial Aquatic Centre and the Tourist Information Centre.
Boucherie was the preferred option, however council said no, stating there is really nothing to do in the area.
The Brown location was suggested because, with a 20 minute charging time, people would have the opportunity to walk in the area and visit local businesses.
BC Hydro will fund the capital cost of installing the charging station.
West Kelowna will maintain the property for two to five years at an estimated cost of $360 per year plus the cost of electricity of approximately $23 per month.
This is part of a program in which Hydro will deploy 30 direct current fast charging stations across the province to provide more opportunities for electric vehicles to travel across the province.
BC Hydro is attempting to create a Southern Interior Highway Loop Network by placing these charging stations up and down the valley.
Only Kelowna would be excluded because FortisBC, and not BC Hydro, provides power to the city
