Speed

She broke through and sucked in air, salt burning her lungs. Behind her was the flaming mast of her ship, sails flaring up. Smoke mixed with salt and brine, and she felt herself choking on air that wasn’t there. Another wave pulled her under. And she broke through again, lungs stinging, eyes blinking out water, black hair plastered to her face, but she couldn’t tell what was night sky and what was sea anymore. It was all black, and both endless bodies had flickering dots of flame. Her head spun, and she was pulled under again. She cycled through breaking water and getting sucked under, but by some miracle made it to shore. Her muscles burned from the effort of staying above the meter high swells. While there was no storm, the girl was young and the sea was still strong. She could see lights in the distance. Most of them were greenish or yellow, and in big squares like they were coming from windows. It was a town, she guessed, so she hobbled along and tried to drip dry on the way there. She could still see the candle of her old ship’s mast still burning in the distance, but it wouldn’t be there much longer.
