Nikita Khrushchev began ruling the Soviet Union in 1954 with the secret speech. In the speech he described how evil Stalin was and his ideas to turn the country around. De-stalinization was completed during Khrushchev’s rule. Gulags, also know as labor camps, were removed. More freedom was granted to the press when Khrushchev added civil liberties. Lastly, Sovnarkhoz, regional economies, were established. There was no longer collectivization instead, self-sufficient farms were created as before. The de-stalinization had a large impact on the Warsaw Pact by causing four revolutions. The first was in Poland. In 1956, Poland developed more of a self-government, resulting in the Polish October. This lead to the Hungarian Revolution. Hungary attempted to become democratic but the Warsaw Pact sent troops. Next, Czechoslovakia made an effort to become democratic as well and gave the freedom of speech and freedom of press to its citizens. However, old regime policy was put back into place when the Warsaw Pact sent their troops. The only successful withdraw from the Warsaw Pact was in Albania. Their socialist dictator, Enver Hoxha, was supported by China. Albania became the first Atheist State by using death, prisons, and secret police to destroy religion. Khrushchev tried to make peace with capitalist countries but ultimately failed. This was the beginning of his downfall along with the Cuban Missile Crisis failure. Leonid Brezhnev would be the next leader to rule the Soviet Union and would do so with a harsher regime.
