Hundred years ago, working women in Russia were for the first time granted full equality with men. All laws discriminating against women were abolished and decrees were adopted proclaiming women's equality with men in society and in the family. Special women clubs were set up in all the towns and villages and they helped in liberating women from age-old prejudices and beliefs. Divorce rate is definitely on the increase and drinking as a vice is also causing headache to sociologists in the Soviet society, as in many other modern societies. Birth rate is declining, especially in the European part of the Soviet Union. Besides day care centres for children, a network of creches and kindergartens pay maternity leaves, pay breaks for breast-feeding, leave for looking after the child till he is one year old. Early pension, reduced production quotas and many others facilities are provided to women. In Russia, legally a woman is at par with man and the household chores are supposed to be shared by the husband and the wife. Woman has still to stand more often in queues.
