Some would say I'm a punctilious bibliophile, that is to say, I'm extremely attentive and meticulous in the collection and upkeep of books. You could find me at the Library of Congress, at 101 Independence Ave SE, Washington, DC 20540--but you'll never find me at a third-rate book store, address--who cares? There are good books in third-rate book stores, however; I just find that most are in a deplorable state, handed down by disreputable owners, those whose only appreciation of the "printed word" are a few opprobrious thoughts scrawled on the sides of the pages--"marginalia", for those of you who may be logophiles--but there is nothing more honorable than preserving the truth, and if one can't at least do that, than one should at least preserve the book in its original form, and truth, perhaps, be entombed therein until an entire civilization passes, then be reopened by a new people to dwell in the overwhelming moment that book and truth are once again alive.
I have hoped that many, many more would take up a devotion to books, but we that absolutely believe in this purpose are few, and hopelessly, I fear, a few we shall remain; ergo, a true bibliophile is one who can't be found around every street corner...as a venerable tome, the two hardly can be found anywhere.
