Once there lived a young man called Ulysses. His father was the king of one of the islands near the main land of Greece. Ulysses grew up to be a strong and brave man. He knew the art of cultivation. He could build a house or a ship as any other man of those days. He could think clearly. He was very clever and cunning. He loved adventures. Ulysses wanted to marry Helen. Helen was very beautiful. She attracted many young men of Greece. Helen's father therefore asked all the young kings including Ulysses to go to his palace so that one of them could be chosen by his daughter. He made all the princes promise that they would help the one whom she chose as her husband and they all agreed. Then she chose Menelaus, the king of Sparta. Helen married Menelaus. So Ulysses gave up the idea of marrying Helen and married Penelope, another princes. Penelope was very pretty. She loved Ulysses. A son was born to them. They were happy.
Ulysses looked after his subjects wisely and Penelope, her home, and child. Everything went well for some years. Then one day Ulysses got a message from Menelaus seeking his help to fight against Paris, the prince of Troy, who had stolen Helen from him. Ulysses had to leave his wife and son. He set out for Troy with other princes. The Greeks fought for ten years but could not defeat the Trojans. The walls of Troy were strong and the Trojans guarded the fort bravely. The Trojan soldiers were gallant and defended their city successfully. Ulysses also knew that there was enough food and water in the city to last for a long time. So he thought to himself, 'A siege is useless. Those Trojans will never give up their city. Let us think of a trick to make them open their gates. Then we may be able to destroy them.'
Then Ulysses told the Greeks about the cunning plan he had thought about and asked them to keep it a secret. They made a big wooden horse with enough space indie it to hold several of them, Then he, along with some of the bravest men, got inside it. They shut the secret door. The other Greeks got into their ships and sailed away as though they are tired of the siege and were going home. They sailed to a little island that was near and they hid themselves there. The Trojans saw the ships sailing away and they also saw the strange horse outside the gate. At first they could not make out the meaning of all these. They dragged the horse into that place, danced and sang round it because they thought that the Greeks had left Troy for good. That night they slept without fear.
When it was midnight the Greeks came back in their ships and the men inside the horse opened the secret door and came out quietly. They rushed to the gates of the city, killed the guard and allowed the Greek soldiers in. They burned the house and killed the innocent people as they like. They destroyed the entire city of Troy. Menelaus took back his wife, Helen. Ulysses was very eager to get back to his own island, to his wife and son. Ten years was a long time. So he and his men set out in their ships with the hope of reaching their homeland in the shortest possible time. Unfortunately high winds on the seas drove them madly along the rough sea for ten days continuously. The ships sailed forward and finally came a strange land. People seemed happy but idle. Ulysses found out that they lived on a special plan that made them sleepy.
