Dowry system is a social evil in our country. It is a disgrace to our country. It shows that Indians in general are very possessive and greedy. This evil has come down to us from olden days. In the olden days, when a girl got married. She was given some heirlooms and gifts by way of dowry. The parents of girls were not under any obligations to give dowry to their daughter. It was purely a voluntary action. But with the passage of time this practice has grown into an evil custom. The curse of dowry is responsible for several dowry deaths every year.
Dowry is the price demanded by the parents of the bridegroom from the parents of the bride. In most cases people cannot afford to give dowry as demanded by the boy's parents. Because of the greed of the parents of the boy, poor people are finding it very difficult to marry off the daughters. The inferior position and economic dependence of women on men is also responsible for this evil practice. Many poor girls have sacrifice their lives at the altar of dowry. We often hear that many unfortunate girls are beaten to death for bringing meagre dowries. Because of the evil of dowry, the birth of a daughter is never welcome in an Indian family.
It is felt by all the right thinking men that the evil of dowry should be removed from India. But somehow this evil persists. It has taken more subtle forms. The so-called pillars of society accept dowry behind the scenes. No sincere effort is made to remove this evil. The rich are wholly to blame for this evil. They have a large amount of black-money. They can afford to spend a lot of money on the marriage of their daughters. They indulge in conspicuous spending. The middle class people are forced to do something to give a good dowry to their daughters. To do so, they are forced to run into debt. Sometimes young girls have to sacrifice themselves to save their parents from humiliation.
