Elsewhere the final soldier hadn’t stopped moving. He didn’t stop running when he heard the roar of pain, nor did he stop when he heard the surprised scream. Instead, he kept moving, intent on staying alive for at least another day. He was in his own eyes, after all, too young to die. He looked back momentarily and saw a bird following him, a falcon by the looks of it, but something wasn’t right about it. The falcon seemed to trail a purplish tint to the air behind it, as if the ominously dark feathers of its wings were transitioning into a wave of darkness that enveloped the forest around it. He thought this as he ran, but he wasn’t prepared for when the bird began to change. The bird at first seemed to grow in size, then distort. It reared backwards and bared its talons, which seemed to grow larger and less sharp, in tandem with its legs which began to take on a more human shape. The wings seemed to extend outwards and the torso seemed to become more bulky, but the rest of what happened was a blur of feathers and darkness. It got to the point where all he saw following him was a swirling vortex of shadow, which was consistently slowing down. As he gained distance from whatever it was, he saw the thing drop to the ground suddenly, before the shroud of darkness began to dissipate. The feathers seemed to disintegrate into flakes of blue and purple, which soon disappeared into nothingness. When the darkness was finally banished by the rays of moonlight shining through the trees, the soldier could make out a child standing in place of the vortex.
