Imagine being immortal. Now, imagine being immortal and the last human being on earth. You wait for millions of years until the sun becomes a red giant - attractive though it would be - and vaporises the earth. Now the earth is no more, you are floating in space, alone. You drift through nothingness for, perhaps, millennia, trapped inside your mind, awaiting some sensory stimulus. Then one day you find yourself inextricably approaching a planet. You can't alter your course; this is going to be your home until the planet dies. This is now your life, ad infinitum.
