The term Computer has been borrowed from compute that means - to calculate. whereas initially computers were used to perform arithmetic calculations at fast speed, now they are used in nearly every field. You can use computers for banking applications , word processing, desktop publishing, weather forecasting, railway ticket reservations, control of machines or robots in factories, scientific research, etc. In brief, a computer may be defined as a device that receives some kind of information/data, analyses it and then applies a predefined set of instructions to it to produce some kind of output. For instance, when you go to railway ticket reservation counter, the operator feed your request for a ticket reservation into the computer. The computer then analyses the data fed by the operator and makes a reservation. Then it prints a ticket for you. The ticket is the output generated by the computer based on the reservations request (input) entered by the operator. It is also said that the computer is a data processor, because it can receive, store, process and retrieve any kind of data. For instance, you can store the names and addresses of all employees working in a company in a computer file. Later, you can ask the computer to print a list of only those employees who work int he Accounts Department.
