Antarctica gives us an idea, how the earth would have been like millions of years ago and how it got divided into various earth masses. The world's geological history is trapped in Antarctica. It is a continent that has a landmass with miles deep ice, layers over layers. In each of those layers lie millions of years old carbon records of the organisms that existed since the beginning of the earth. Over the issue of the future of the earth, these carbon records will shed light on the past and help the scientist to know more about the past, present and future. Antarctica also warns us for the dangerous impacts of global warming which can destroy our future. Thus, Antarctica is the perfect place to go and to understand the earth's present, past and the future.
Antarctica is the coldest, driest and windiest continent in the world. While in Antarctica, we can see ice-sheets breaking, water level rising, Crab eater seals taking sun bath on the ice. We can also walk on the thin layers of ice and feel the living ocean under our feet. It stores about 90 percent ice of the earth's total volumes. We can see icebergs as big as a small country. We see a green patch of phytoplankton – a microscopic grass that feeds the entire marine life. If it is digged a bit, we can see the fossils of half a million year old animals, plants and birds that got killed in the previous ice-age. It has a very simple eco-system but due to global worming, it is surviving under a great danger.
The study of this region gives us the knowlede about the world's geological history. India and Antarctica were parts of a super continent named Gondwana which was much warmer than present time and forstered a huge variety of flora and fauna. After million years' process this landmass divided into countries. Its study shows how slight changes in the climate can change the shape of the world. All secrets are trapped in the layers of ice in the form of half million year old carbon records. It helps us understand the significance of ozone and carbon, evolution and extinction and earth's Cordilleran folds and Pre-cambrian granite shields. Thus we can say that the world's geological history is really trapped in Antarctica.
