It was midnight. The last lamp on the Jefferson Street just went off. The darkness overtook the light while the wind was playing with dry oak leaves. Suddenly, the birds lifted their heavy bodies and gently levitated above David's room. He could not sleep tonight. Not only tonight, actually. David has been having a hard time falling sleep these days. "Don't worry, honey. You're just 11! It's normal, and possibly due to the stress from school," his mom comforted him. Little did she know that David's heart just got broken.
It all happened last week. On a way to school, he met Adam, his classmate. His blue eyes were like an ocean David wanted to swim in, his brown hair was like a dark chocolate he wanted to taste, and his smile, his smile was like the warmest hug he wished to receive. Adam was talking about this terrible teacher who just gives so much homework but David wasn't listening. In his mind, every single look at Adam was in slow, very slow motion. His smile lasted decades and shined like a pearl. He knew that time in reality passes by too quickly, therefore he created this space in his mind where time doesn't matter.
David loved these walks to school. He got to see Adam every day. It was that day David wanted to say what he truly feels to him. He wanted to say it for so long! He stopped walking and looked down. "Better now than never," he thought. Adam, still talking, turn around and stopped too.
"What's the matter, Dave?" he asked. Again that warm smile.
"Eh, you know, eh, Adam, I don't know, eh.," David stuttered.
"You know you can tell me anything, right?"
"Well, eh, not sure about this one."
"Just say it, David, for god sake!" Adam said and laughed.
"Well, Adam..."
"Yeah?"
" I think I..."
"Yeah?"
"I think I like you!"
"Eh, ok," Adam replied. Awkward pause. "Well, I like you as a friend, too, right?"
"Right, but I not only like you. I love y.."
"Hey, Adam!" someone yelled from a distance.
"Oh, hi, Susan! Wanna join us?" Adam replied.
"Sure, wait up."
"Who is Susan?" David asked and stared at this girl whom he had never seen before.
"Oh, she is my girlfriend. You didn't know?"
"Right, of course, I knew," he lied.
"By the way, what did you wanna say before?"
"Oh, never mind now," David said and his young innocent heart just broke into thousand pieces. His mind erased all his memories of blue ocean, dark chocolate, and the warm hug turned into a freezing rain.
Adam was still awake. After recalling this memory again he shook his head and slowly entered the realm where all becomes possible and nothing stands in his love. The dreams.
