One day Grandma and Grandpa had gone somewhere and left the boys at home. Of course, boys being boys, as they say, one thing led to another, and my dad, and my uncle Herman started wrestling in the house. Then, naturally, one of them got mad, and the other one took off out of the house. Well, they chased each other around the barnyard for awhile, and while passing by the chicken coop, one of them got a brilliant idea about how to get even. I guess when the eggs started flying, things got even more out of hand. Dad said he was closing in on Uncle Herman along the side of the barn, but Herman was apparently out of ammunition, and starting to panic. Just then Herman ran around the other side of the barn, spotted an open window and quickly dove through it...headlong... right into, and through, a huge pile of manure. Daddy, coming in the big double doors in front, catches up to Herman just as the latter is pulling his head out of the pile, face covered with you-know-what. Well, if that isn’t a disgusting enough picture, remember Daddy was loaded up with a handful of eggs. Picture Herman, covered with manure, and the yucky yolks of several eggs running down his face. I’m not sure what happened after that, because it’s difficult to keep the story going when you’re laughing so hard. But, it’s not hard to imagine, what with the lack of indoor plumbing in the days of the Saturday night bath in a rain barrel (whether you needed it or not), just how much trouble that mess would be to get off of you. It would be about this time that I’d get the idea that in his present mood, my Dad would surely be a soft touch. After all, when you’ve just admitted to practically the crime of the century, you surely wouldn’t be able to say no to something as mild as your son riding his bike just a little ways out of the neighborhood; or his playing outside with the other kids just a little bit after dark... Wrong!! “That’d be too dangerous. You’re too young. What would the neighbors think? Someone might get you.” Of course, if you’re the one who’s afraid someone might get you it’s, “No one’s gonna get you; no one would want you”. Oh well, my parents were wonderful, and after I grew up I finally agreed with their methods; just like my Dad told me a million times that I would.
