At one point, my parents had three dogs at their house.
Two of the dogs were pure breds, bought at 8-weeks old. Beautiful dogs and great pets.
They lived a quite-nice life, being spoiled as most Kernan dogs are with walks and lots of attention. Shortly after getting those two dogs they got a third dog, Rocky, who was rescued from a pound.
For the uninformed, a pound is almost like K-9 prison:
They stay there waiting to get adopted.
A few times each day, a bucket of food is slid under the gate.
The dogs are often let out for a set period, much like a prison. And if nobody rescues the dog within a few months, they are typically euthanized.
In this way, a pound is much like K-9 Death Row.
Rocky lived six months of his life like this.
Fast forward a couple of years after his adoption.
Mom gets a call that some dogs, wearing collars with her phone number on them, were found running along the side of the road.
Apparently, while the dogs were out in the front yard, someone had come and gone and not secured the front gate properly.
Mom goes to pick the dogs up from a nice woman who was holding them. When she got there, she realized only two of the three dogs were there - which was a problem.
puts them in the car, drives them back to the house to drop them off and look for the third dog.
When she arrives, sure enough, there is the front gate to the yard, wide open.
And can you guess who was sitting right in the middle of that front yard? Who had full opportunity to run away but chose to sit right by the front door waiting?
guessed it: Rocky.
He knew what was on the other side of that fence.
Rocky learned something others learn too late or not at all
We all love the wonderful head massage after a hair cut at our local barber. It is refreshing and relaxing. Sometimes our necks are twisted as well and the click sound of our cervical vertebrae gives us immense satisfaction.
