Three days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that even those opposition parties, who had been arch rivals till now, were coming together for the sake of grabbing power, BSP chief Mayawati said that the opposition was getting united in the interest of the people. Addressing a rally in Maghar town of Sant Kabirnagar on June 28, Prime Minister Modi had targeted the opposition saying that the political party which imposed emergency and the parties who strongly opposed it were now coming together to grab power.
Mayawati on Sunday said that coming together of political parties against an 'arrogant' BJP was for the welfare of the people.
“BJP understands this pretty well and is therefore getting restless,” she said in a statement.
The BSP supremo said that the allies of BJP were also getting disenchanted and breaking ties with it ahead of next general elections. In a politically loaded statement, BSP chief reminded BJP of the electoral outcomes in 1967, 1977 and 1989. “The BJP should not forget what happened in those years,” Mayawati said, in yet another affirmation of her getting ready to join hands with opposition parties in a bid to stop the BJP from returning to power in 2019.
In 1967, when the parliamentary and state assembly elections were held simultaneously, Congress was voted out of power in nine states.
In Uttar Pradesh, Congress lost power after Charan Singh left the party along with other Member of Legislative Assemblies and lager formed a non-Congress government. In 1977, post-emergency period, Congress got voted out having lost to Janata Party, while in 1989 Janata Dal chief Vishwanath Pratap Singh managed to form a National Front government with the support of Bhartiya Janta Party.
