The Queen of Hearts was very upset! She wanted to make jam tarts for tea, and she had the pastry ready, but she couldn't find any jam. She had searched every pantry in the palace, and all the cupboards, but there wasn't a jar of jam to be seen. "You must have used it all, Your Majesty," suggested Alice. "But how can I make jam tarts without JAM?" roared the Queen. "And I MUST have jam tarts!" The Mad Hatter had a suggestion or two. "How about filling your tarts with chocolate pudding instead? Or you could make porridge tarts!" The Queen of Hearts said that the Mad Hatter must go away and stop being silly. She chased him through the palace and out into the garden. There, to make sure that he went away, she started tossing hard little apples at him. The Mad Hatter went, at last, and Alice picked up some of the apples. "Why, these are crab apples," she said. "I remember my mother making crab-apple jelly with these. We used to eat it with bread and butter, like jam." "JAM!" shrieked the Queen. "Then we'll make some straight away!" The Queen set the Walrus and the Carpenter to work gathering crab apples, and made Alice go with her to the royal kitchens, where they began making crab-apple jelly. It wasn't very difficult, and the jelly was ready in time to make the tarts for a late supper. "Crab-apple jelly tarts are simply lovely!" cheered the Queen. Alice thought so, too, and so did the Walrus, the Carpenter and even the Mad Hatter, who had all been invited to share that very special meal.
