"I remember life at the academy. I remember sitting in that cramped lecture hall, fighting my urge to doze off while listening to somebody ramble on about thrust mechanics and tactical maneuvering. Written exams every month, oral reports every week; I barely had room to breathe. I remember thinking to myself that this was all so stupid. What did any of it have to do with real flying? Sure I tried my best to learn the material, but I spent most of my time laying on my bed, thinking about what I was gonna do when I got to space and how I was gonna do it. I was always at the bottom of my class in every subject, and the other cadets wouldn't even look my way. Bad influence. Two hundred pilots were in my graduating class. I'm the only one who's still alive."
