Once there lived a poor woodcutter in a village. Everyday he went to the forest and cut wood. He sold the wood in the market and earned his living. One day he was cutting wood near a river. Suddenly his axe slipped from his hands and fell into the river. He sat under the tree and began to cry. The river Goddess heard his cry. She felt pity on him. She came out of the river and asked the woodcutter. Old man, why are you so sad? The woodcutter said, The woodcutter said, my axe has fallen into the river. How shall I cut wood now? I don’t have another axe. I am so poor that I can’t buy another axe. It was the only means of my livelihood. The river Goddess dived into the river and came up with an axe of gold. Is it your axe? Asked the river Goddess. No it is not mine, said the woodcutter. The river Goddess dived again into the river and came up with a silver axe. Is it your axe? Asked the Goddess. No it is not mine, said the woodcutter. The Goddess dived for the third time into the river. This time she brought it iron axe. The woodcutter was very happy when he saw his axe. The river Goddess was very much pleased with the honesty of the woodcutter. She gave all the three axes to the woodcutter. The woodcutter became rich and lived happily ever after.
