In the argument, the author suggests that the tire manufacturer should imitate a toy maker's "apprentice training program" in order to cut down the cost of training programs. To support the suggestion, the author cites that the toy maker's "apprentice training program" has been very successful. However, the author's argument is not convincing for two reasons. First, the author assumes that operations in tire manufacturer are comparable to "apprentice training program." However, the author fails to supply any evidence to support this assumption. In fact, the tire manufacturer's operations could be different from the toy maker's operations. For example, employees in the tire production line need to focus on the production process, and they have no time to teach new employees, or they will make mistakes which would impact the production efficiency and accuracy. However, in the toy's production, employees can do their work while teaching new employees without making mistakes. To strengthen the assumption, the author could have supplied evidence that operations in tire manufacture and toy maker are in similar patterns. Second, the author assumes that senior employees will voluntarily teach new employees. In the argument, the author does not mention that senior employees may get bonuses or compliments from tutoring new employees. If there are no bonuses for senior employees, it is unlikely that they would voluntarily teach new employees facing the crisis that might effluent their productivities. Thus, without specific data, it is hard to say that the "apprentice training program" will save money for the company. If the bonus for senior employees is higher than training expenses, the program is not profitable. To strengthen the assumption, the author would have provided evidence that the expense in "apprentice training program" is lower than training, and teaching new employees will not impact senior employees productivities. In conclusion, the argument is not persuasive because of the reason described above, and it can be strengthened by the suggestions given.
