Anna followed the doe into the woods. The pretty little deer had a white tail that caught the moonlight, making it visible even in the shadows of the trees. The doe sped up a hill and down the other side. Anna followed, her boots crunching in the leaves below. There was a chill in the air, yet she didn't want to turn back. There were miles to go before she could sleep... The doe vaulted over the thin trickle of a stream. Anna's human feet followed easily enough. It became more difficult when the moonlit creature jumped through a tangle of wild bushes, sleek and fast and dexterous. Anna crashed through the bushes, thorns biting into her skin, and emerged into a silent glade. There she saw the doe lean its elegant head down to munch on the green grasses waving in the slight breeze. Anna smiled... And then a terrible black shape appeared in the clearing, melting from shadow, its ruby-red eyes fixed on the doe, slavering in hunger, great jagged teeth closing around the neck of the small deer as it lunged. Anna turned, hoping she had time to run, through the tangle of bushes and across the stream and up and down the hill and back to the road, away from something that wasn't a wolf and wasn't a bear, but something else entirely. She ran, and she heard it roar behind her.
