Today, many animals are in danger of being extinct. One of the African Elephant, which is the lagers living land animal, weighting up to 5400 kg. The hunters did not kill them for fun. They killed them just for the tusks, which can be made into ivory statues or jewelry. There are 400000 to 600000 left now.
In Indonesia, the Sumatran Tiger is now endangered because its habitat is used at agriculture. The Sumatran Tiger is the smallest among all the tiger species. Fewer than 500 Sumatran Tigers remain in the wild nowadays.
Another endangered animal is the Giant Panda of China. Giant pandas live in the shoot of bamboo, but as this is cleared so that the land can be farmed, it is difficult for them to find enough food. Giant Pandas weight about 200 to 300 pounds. There are only 1000 existing in the wild in Central and Western China and 60 in zoos.
The Chinese White Dolphins around Hong Kong are also endangered. These are mammals weighing more than 200 kg and are usually found at the junction of the rivers. There are about 150 of them left. Construction projects such as Chek Lap Kok airport and the North Lantau Expressway have destroyed much of the living area of the dolphins. Moreover, over-fishing has refuse the dolphin’s food supply. Finally the increase of traffic in Mainland China and Hong Kong causes noise pollution. Sharks and other large sea animals often kill and eat dolphins.
More and more animals are becoming endangered now. We should learn how to treasure them.
