The average life expectancy in India rose by 4.6 years by 2008, because of the impact of economic reforms. As believed, these reforms did not just benefit the elite but also the poor. It was due to the improvement in overall living conditions that the average life expectancy to be 66.1 years at birth. The general success of the reforms are praised more because of its positive impact on women and rural population. The rapid jump in rise of life expectancy of women indicates its lagging behind in the past. The overall gains and benefit of these reforms were better access to nutritious food, healthcare and better hygiene. Economic reforms benefited both urban and rural areas effectively. As more reforms are needed for growth the government must move ahead to design free business policies and create employment opportunities to put the economy on the track of rapid development.
