As with many other modern gadgets, we Indian as a group are novices at using the telephone. Ring..ring...and we lift the receiver, hear the other man, say "wrong number" and bang the instrument. Or him guessing about, our identity. Dialing can be carefully done or carelessly done. Many of us start thinking after getting the number or person we have dialed.
Remember, the telephone is an instrument of long-distance conversation where your personality is reflected only by your voice. In direct conversation it is not only the voice but the face, the expression and mannerisms that count. Hence being a good conversationalist is not necessarily being a good telephone conversationalist. If you hear a bit of sad news you can express your regret by just gestures in direct conversation; on the telephone you have to express it by an appropriate sound. Even tin routine conversation it is not enough to listen, it is necessary to let the other man know by appropriate sounds, that you are listening.
If a man calls when you are leaving, he knows you are going out and so will detain you longer than necessary; on the telephone he has means of knowing whether you were leaving when the phone rang...unless you tell him. Also, anybody who comes to your house or your office is a visitor and is treated with consideration and courtesy; likewise, the one who takes the trouble of ringing up is also a guest and has to be treated with the same consideration and care.
The telephone personality of a man or woman includes mainly the pitch of voice, the pronunciation and the rise and fall of the voice, unlike direct conversation where these are only incidental. Shouting in the pitch which will be clearly audible without being jarring. This may vary with the efficiency of the instrument at a particular time or with the distance. But generally there is a particular pitch for every voice which one has to find out by experience.
This apart, being clear in diction is important and for this it is necessary to pronounce the consonants extra clearly. On the telephone there is no lip movement for the other man to red. This pitch has to be suitably varied according to the subject of the conversation.
