When we imagine certain things happening to make us happy, we have stumbled across the basis for all addictions, frustration and disappointment. The truth is, whatever happens is not what makes us happy. It is the idea that it can make us happy which makes it seem so. But when we make happiness conditional on other things, we won't be happy if those things don't materialize. The truth is, we don’t need a reason to be happy. If we become aware of the conditions we place on our happiness, we can change our minds and simply choose to be happy without a cause. Remove the conditions and happiness naturally shines through. Everyday I notice the conditioning set upon the experience of happiness, through advertising, incentives, and even some goals. When I see this in my own imaginings, I let it go. If that doesn't do the trick, I practice reminding myself regularly: I am happy enough. True happiness is unconditional and free. Breathe it in and smile it out. Just be happy!
