Scientists and news media are presenting ever evidence of climate change. The government cannot be expected to solve this problem. It is the responsibility of individuals to change their lifestyle to prevent further damage. The responsibility for the major environmental problems is increasingly being shifted to the individual. In my personal opinion, appealing to individual virtues for addressing climate change is something akin to victim-blaming and a far more effective approach would be to hold the government accountable. Firstly, there are at least two reasons why making it the duty of individuals to limit global warming is wrong. Obviously, since climate change is a planetary-scale threat and, as such, requires planetary-scale reforms that can only be implemented by the world's government. Individuals can at most be responsible for their own behavior, but the government has the power to implement legislation that compels industries and individuals to act sustainably. Moreover, individual action is sufficient in itself to make a difference. Encouraging people to change their daily habits cannot guarantee the result and preventing the large-scale change that people urgently need. Secondly, I believe that it is cynical when saying that the government is judged to have no influence on the combat against extreme global warming. Indeed, with the government intervention in environment protection by introducing effluent fees or incentives for the consumption of eco-friendly products, these policies are considered as indirect effective policies to alleviate the environmental deterioration. In addition, the authorities have the power to enact legislation that could regulate industries to remain sustainable emission limits and adhere to environmental protection standards. In conclusion, I firmly reckon that personal sacrifice cannot be the solution to tackle this climate crisis and these problems will likely to persist and even intensify unless the government enact effective and potentially costly environmental policies.
