Defensive drivers prevent accidents when other drivers make mistakes. Driving conditions can be bad, but the defensive driver tries to predict and avoid problems. How does he do this? He gets the big picture. This means he pays attention to everything on the road and everything that he can see. He looks for changes that may become problems. He looks far ahead. He checks for traffic signs, other vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians (people on foot). He keeps his eyes moving. He doesn’t just watch the lights of the vehicle in front of him. He looks near and far, right and left, and in the mirrors to see behind him. He tries to keep space around him. This allows him to slow down, stop, or turn in an emergency. It gives him a way out. He makes sure that other road users see him. He uses his turn signals and brake lights to tell other drivers what he plans to do. Sometimes he uses his horn to warn pedestrians other drivers.
