I believe in fate, I really do. I think life has been preplanned for all of us and we just have to navigate the right choices. That's why I let the numbers do the talking. Numbers dictate my life. Literally. The ability to make good decisions without clouded judgement is important for one simple reason: there are an abundance of choices and one wrong decision could screw up your whole life. My uncle is proof of that. My uncle was a kind man. A bit of a drunk, but we all have our flaws. One day on his way to work, his usual route was closed, and he had to take a detour. He ended up at a fork in the road in an unfamiliar part of town and could only take one of the three directions the road led. He had no clue where any of the roads ventured; it was left up to complete chance. He chose the road to the left. That day he made the wrong choice. It took 36 hours for his truck to be found in the city lake. That day, I learned a powerful lesson at 10 years old: don't underestimate the power of chance. That year for my birthday, I inherited the betting dice my uncle used to carry with him. All tough decisions are about weighing values: financial, emotional, intellectual, social, and so on. You have to consider them all equally, but there is no such way to measure these values when put up to chance. That's why I adopted my system of decision-making by the roll of the dice. Where I struggle to see things clearly, as most humans do, the dice know all. With one roll, they make my most important decisions, even the ones not up to chance. In the 8th grade, the dice told me to enroll in advanced math, where I met my best friend. Senior year of high school, the dice told me not to go to the prom with Mike Torrez, who ended up getting so drunk that night that he puked all over the dance floor. In university, the dice told me to study anthropology, and I have now recently graduated with a BA in anthropological studies. The dice have saved me and led me to my fate every single time. Which is why my heart sank when the dice predicted I will die tomorrow.
