The term Computer has been borrowed from compute that means - to calculate. whereas initially computers were used to perform arithmetic calculations at fast speed, now they are used in nearly every field. You can use computers for banking applications, word processing, desktop publishing, weather forecasting, railway ticket reservations, control of machines or robots in factories, scientific research, etc. In brief, a computer may be defined as a device that receives some kind of information/data, analyses it and then applies a predefined set of instructions to it to produce some kind of output. For instance, when you go to railway ticket reservation counter, the operator feed your request for a ticket reservation into the computer. The computer then analyses the data fed by the operator and makes a reservation. Then it prints a ticket for you. The ticket is the output generated by the computer based on the reservations request (input) entered by the operator. It is also said that the computer is a data processor, because it can receive, store, process and retrieve any kind of data. For instance, you can store the names and addresses of all employees working in a company in a computer file.
