Parts of the Heart
Your heart began pumping before you were born. It will keep pumping as long as you live. The heart is divided into two sides. Each side works as a separate pump and sends blood along different paths. The right side pumps blood to the lungs. In the lungs, the blood gets oxygen and gives up carbon dioxide. The blood then flows to the left side of the heart. The left side pumps the blood through arteries to all the tissues of the body. Each side of the heart has two parts. The upper part of each side is called an atrium. The lower part is a ventricle. Each ventricle is larger and stronger than an atrium. The parts of your heart pump are a repeating pattern. The left and right atrium pump first, and then two ventricles pump. After a brief rest, the pattern repeats. The muscles of your heart have many small blood vessels. The blood in these vessels gives your heart oxygen, food, and water. In one form of heart disease, these blood vessels get clogged, keeping blood from reaching heart muscles. During your life, your heart might beat almost 3 billion times. When you are running, your heart pumps faster to give your muscles extra oxygen. It pumps more slowly when you sit quietly or sleep. Not all hearts are alike. The hearts of most reptiles have only three parts, or chambers. Fish hearts have only new chambers.
