In the past few decades, there has been a profound increase in the number of individuals questioning the balance between salary and passion for one’s work. While some may strongly disagree, I am of the fierce belief that job satisfaction is essential for both societal and personal development. From my perspective, work appreciation not only leads to economic growth, but also improves individual mental health and quality of life. To begin, there is an argument to be made that an individual's fulfillment at work is far more powerful in driving a nation’s economic development than a pay cheque. To illustrate this point, the search engine giant, Google, allows its employees to spend 25% of their time to develop a personal project, which has led to widely successful innovations, such as Gmail and Google Maps. For this reason, it is clearly evident that autonomy and creativity at work are directly linked to motivation and productivity, as innovations such as these have yielded billions of dollars to the US economy. What is more, a company that values its employees is able to attract international talents that leads to further strengthening of the company, as well as the nation’s competitiveness on a global scale. This being the case, there is no doubt that enjoying one’s work is important, because if there is no joy at work, businesses will find it difficult to thrive, thereby resulting in a poorer economy. In addition to this, countless doctors have argued that job satisfaction is critical for maintaining psychological wellbeing and a good quality of life. For instance, a survey conducted at Wall Street showed that up to 70% of financial brokers experienced insomnia and depression due to excessive work-related stress, indicating that even a high salary cannot compensate for a physically draining position. Moreover, according to ample statistical data, the combination of extreme pressure and depression can lead to domestic violence that ruins relationships and families. Furthermore, people who work for non-profit organisations, such as soup kitchens, often find fulfilment through their service to others instead of monetary returns. With this in mind, it is not unreasonable to assume that if money were the only reward at work, people would suffer from severe mental health issues and poor quality of life. To conclude the aforementioned discussion, the overwhelming evidence seems to suggest that job satisfaction not only provides the motivation to drive a company’s growth, but it also provides psychological rewards. In my humble opinion, work fulfilment is far more important than an enormous salary, as such joy is essential for developing both personal happiness and a nation’s economic prosperity.
