Whether success depends on internal qualities, such as determination and a hard-working mentality, or external factors, including money and appearance, is a question that many dwell upon. There are supporters on both stances and for me, I believe that both internal and external factors are important, which can boost our chance of success after being put into good use.
A common reason why people view determination as a critical prerequisite for success is that the road to success is a long-haul journey and undetermined people would give up way before they get even close to the point of success. No success comes easily and it takes years, even decades, of relentless hard work. Only
determination and faith in ourselves can help us get through countless days of struggle for success. The same reason goes for hard work. As it often takes years to overcome obstacles before any considerable success, only when we dedicate more time than others can we get there faster.
Those who believe in the predominant importance of appearance would argue that good and clean-looking people can usually get along with others more easily, so they are more likely to build up better and more extensive connections. Good-looking people can leave a nice first impression on others and therefore get an upper hand in socializations. With adequate money, we can save tons of time from trivial and meaningless tasks that stall our progress towards success. Instead, we can invest time in meaningful things that directly contribute to our success.
I see all the factors mentioned above as critical factors in terms of achieving success and their importance to individuals largely depends on what situations they are in. For instance, in order to achieve the same success, the significance of hard work to rich people might be lower than that to poor people, because the latter need to work way
harder in order to make up for the gap due to poverty.
