In this line of thought, the reading passage, by stating three major reasons, claims that decline in reading literature has unfortunate influences on the public culture of reading literature. The professor, on the other hand, refutes all of the text's evidence.
First of all, the author brings up the idea that the decline in reading books especially literature leads the general public to miss out on important benefits of reading literature, which is intellectual stimulation and exercising the imagination. Nonetheless, the lecturer argues that there are other books in other areas such as history and politics that have high quality, which make people more creative and stimulate their imaginations.
Secondly, the writer holds the view that people will waste their time by watching television and movies rather than reading novels and literature, which lowers the level of culture in general. In contrast, the speaker avers that watching movies or listening to music is not wasting time because today's culture has changed to many forms. Therefore, reading the literature is not the only way to improve the culture, rather, investing time in other areas like movies can be also effective in improving culture.
Thirdly, the essay highlights that less reading literature leads to fewer supports to writers; thus, writing and reading of literature is declining further since there will be less standard of readers. Conversely, the professor posits this assertion and explains that it is not reasonable to blame the reader for this problem. In fact, the writer is the fault since today authors write novels and literature that are difficult to understand for the general public.
