You're different, she said.
He shuffled his cookie crumbs on his plate with his finger. His foot bounced under the table over and over, a habit he could never seem to break. A habit he didn't know he had. The sodas on the table vibrated.
And I like that, she smiled.
He didn't see it with his eyes on his plate, organizing the crumbs in order of size, but he knew she smiled. Her voice gave it away. He had given up hope of eye contact a long time ago, but maybe it was only a few seconds.
There was a pause. She was pushing him to speak with every millisecond of patient silence. She had a way of doing that. He took a breath.
Maybe we could go and see the new Dark Bunny movie sometime? he said as his glasses seemed to itch on his face. He adjusted them accordingly, but it didn't seem to help much. His foot bounced violently. The crumbs.
I'd like that.
His mouth curled up into a small smile. His foot settled. The sodas calmed.
Arthur? she said.
Another pause. Another moment of patient pressure. He knew what his name meant this time. He looked up from his plate in obedience, making eye contact.
Yes, Sue Ellen.
I'd really like that a lot.
