For beginner typers, the first thing you should learn is the correct typing position. When typing, you should put your fingers on the "home row". This means the left hand should be rested on the a, s, d, and f keys. The right hand should be rested on the j, k, l, and ; keys. Your thumbs will be hovering over the spacebar. Your fingers will then move to the surrounding keys and it helps to look at a fingering chart for typing. You will use that so you can know what fingers press which keys. Your fingers should always return to the home row after pressing each key. It also helps to memorize where each key is, not visibly, but by muscle memory. This is necessary so you don't look down at your fingers while typing. This helps with efficiency and speed. As a beginner, it's okay to look down from time to time. However, as you are growing as a typer, it is necessary to withdraw from that. It is good to maintain a good typing posture and withdraw from slouching. You should be sitting in an upright position. You should also find a comfortable position for your hands. Typing can be uncomfortable when done for a long period of time. Your keyboard should be centered with your body so you are not typing from an angle. Since nothing is mastered overnight, the best thing to do is practice! There are many websites you can use to practice your typing, including this one! There are typing games and exercises that help many typers to type effectively and fast. For experienced typers, you can type more effectively if you cut your nails. Yes! As weird as that may sound, typing with long nails can hinder the speed of your typing. It can allow you to press unwanted keys and make you have to press the backspace bar. As trivial as that may sound, it is actually an issue and will make you type slower. Trust me, I promise. Lastly, I suggest that you get a keyboard that you are comfortable with. If you get a keyboard that you are comfortable with, that can also help you type. Some keyboard's keys are easy to press even when little pressure is applied. Although, some can be the opposite. It is important to find out if you like typing on keyboards with keys that are easy to press, hard to press, or in between. You can watch Youtube videos and/or do research on typing efficiency for further information.
