There was once in France a very rich merchant who had three sons, and three daughters. He was a clever man, and he spent a lot of money on teachers for his six children. They had a very comfortable life in town. His daughters were beautiful, especially the youngest. When she was little, everybody thought that she looked lovely. They called her, 'Little Beauty.' When she grew up, people still called her Beauty. This made her older sisters very angry. Beauty was more attractive than her sisters, and she was also nicer than them. The two oldest were very proud because they were rich. They thought that they were very important, and they didn't like spending time with other merchants' daughters. They were interested only in meeting people from rich, old French families. They went out every day to parties, dances, plays, and concerts; and they laughed at their youngest sister, because she spent most of her time reading good books. People knew that their father was a rich man, and because the girls had a lot of money, several important merchants asked to marry them; but the two oldest sisters said that they didn't want to marry unless they could marry some sort of lord.
