Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi has made a suggestion during his address to States Chief Ministers, Home Ministers, and Police chief that the entire Police force in the country-no matter to which State it may belong - - should be given one common uniform. He left the decision to the collective wisdom of the States and the Centre, but his suggestion did mean to indicate the direction of the Government’s thinking on the issue. The Prime Minister, apparently, sought to create a new unified awareness of the common role of the States and the Centre to control crime in any form. It is up to the States in particular to understand the symbolism that the Prime Minister is seeking to implement into practice. The two-day conference underlined the importance of a common thought and action against crime which is resorting to modern technology to outwit the law enforcement agencies such as Police. Since technology-based crimes can be masterminded from any place in the country -- or the world -- the Government suggested a common method of handling the wrong-doing as a joint responsibility of the States as well as the Centre. Common uniform, thus, would be only a symbolism of the unity among all Police forces across the country. The symbolism of common uniform is a metaphor of that unity, the Prime Minister seemed to suggest in his short but powerful address. That is, of course, a new concept and the country’s establishment will take much time to reconcile with the idea of common uniform for their respective Police forces. But there is little that the nation will discuss this issue and decide what to do -- since the suggestion has come from the Prime Minister himself. Some political elements may invent some fake reasons to oppose the idea. But there is no doubt that to have a common uniform for the Police force nationwide is certainly a good idea that deserves deep application of mind before it is accepted or not accepted. If accepted, it will have the capacity to bring about a big change in the attitude of the Police force and its allied agencies. A new atmosphere will get ushered into the country on the common front against crime. For, it is really time the Police force is subjected to a positive change -- which can begin with a common uniform.
