National coverage of those assaults and mass arrests galvanized national attention on Alabama’s violent enforcement of White racial supremacy, and helped buoy passage of the national Civil Rights Act of 1964. Birmingham’s Sixteenth Street Baptist Church was bombed in retaliation for the community’s role in organizing the desegregation protests. The bombing killed four girls and wounded over twenty other church members. Though three men would later be convicted, an investigation into the church bombing had been completed with no prosecutions in 1968, the year before my dad arrived with his parents to make his way to his first White nationalist conference.
