One school of thought holds that children should be encouraged to be competitive, while others are of the opinion that teaching teamwork spirit in children is much more useful for society. The following essay will discuss both views before concluding that I lean towards the latter.
Granted, nurturing a sense of competition is essential in building confidence, but its drawbacks cannot be neglected. The primary key is that children taught to be competitive tend to have high self-awareness, they could evaluate themselves, their weaknesses, and improve them. People who favour competition never give up, they make attempts to achieve their goals, which is a valuable skill in order to succeed in any field. However, being too competitive could give rise to negative emotions among youngsters. For example, the immature thoughts of the youths could be twisted by the common sayings that they need to have the highest score in their class or among their peers, so they might do everything to achieve it, even resort to cheating during exams. Therefore, ecouranging the feeling of competition is a double-edged sword due to its negative results in the long run.
On the other end of the spectrum, adherents of cooperative teaching state that it provides much more comprehensive skills to become useful individuals in society. First of all, cooperative children may improve their teamwork skills, including: sympathy, sharing ideas, building the connection and maintaining relationships. By working in groups, youngsters improve the ability to view a problem from multiple perspectives which contributes to expanding their horizons. Another key consideration is understanding the importance of collaboration since understanding the importance of collaboration from a young age provides a solid foundation for children to adapt well to their future working environments or social roles. For example, an employee who already has cooperative skills is likely to be valued by their boss since they could collaborate with co-workers and handle the problems well.
In conclusion, while competitive side offers several advantages, I believe that children should be taught to become cooperative so as to develop more comprehensive skills and to be equipped with useful experience for the future.
