According to local legend, this area is known as the Rishing area because Shringa Rishi performed penance here during the Satya Yuga. The location where Shringa Rishi carried out his penance is situated in the former Ranipokhari V.D.C. (now Ward No. 8). It is said that Shringa Rishi used a trident to draw black water from the ground due to a lack of water. Today, this site is called Ajambari, and devotees from various places visit it.
Another local legend states that the name "Kotdarbar" remained because Mani Mukund Sen's nephew, Samsen, ruled in Kotdarbar when Nepal was divided into small states. Old swords are still found on the premises of the ancient palace that once stood there. Currently, there is a Kalyan Devi temple at the site, and there is a location where the king kept his weapons. Additionally, the Jyamiremai Temple is located on Jyamiremai Hill, where young Kanya Kumar boys serve as priests. The people of this region also have a tradition of offering panchavali in the temple with great celebration.
According to these legends, it can be assumed that the name of this rural municipality was derived from these historical and cultural elements, hence the name Rishing Rural Municipality. Within this municipality, there are various temples, monasteries, and caves, including Bhirkot Durbar, Gadgadeshwar Temple, Dubungko Kot, and Durbar.
