America started as a place of happiness and a place of hope. Jeanne was living happily with her family by the ocean. She looked up to her dad and loved her mom and siblings. Then the attack on Pearl Harbor happened. Her father came back talking about the attack and FBI agents started investigating anyone of Japanese descent. Jeane’s father was arrested on suspicion of giving oil to Japanese submarines. When he was arrested he just surrendered, this turned Jeane’s world upside down. She had been living in America peacefully her whole life and yet she watched her father get dragged away because of the paranoia of the people. She didn’t like school because even there she could feel the fear and judgemental stares. She had to leave her old home after her father was arrested. Her mom seemed to always be crying because of the constant changes. They finally ended up getting on a bus to go to Manazar. Manazar was a dusty and cold place. It was not yet ready for people yet people were being forced in. Jeanne had gone from a place of happiness and security to a place barely put together and of sadness. Her family tried their best to stick together but eventually were drawn apart. She would reflect on those happy days when her family would sit together at the table enjoying their meals together. Now they all separated sitting at tables with their friends. Her life went from a happy and secure one to one filled with loss and insecurity. When her father eventually came back, he was no longer the same man. She could no longer look up to him and he had become a rambling angry and abusive man. She no longer had the same life as she was born with. She was now surrounded by sorrow.
